The Growing Marijuana Industry in Small-Town America
If you’ve paid any attention to the news over the last few years, you’ve probably noticed quite a bit of talk about the marijuana industry as state after state have been jumping in to vote on legalization. In fact, it was just in June of 2018 that voters in our home state approved a measure to make Oklahoma the 30th in the nation to allow access to medical marijuana. This came as a surprise to many, considering Oklahoma has traditionally been a very conservative state. But it just goes to show how the support for legalization isn’t limited to a specific demographic, age group, or political party.
Desert Extracts is proud to be part of the movement to empower people to have access to cannabis-containing products. And today, we are very happy to share an article in which our founder, Derek Woods, was interviewed. The Oklahoman, the largest daily newspaper in the state, published an article about a week ago explaining the impact of marijuana legalization in rural communities. In the story, Derek explains how he started the business and how it has been embraced by the community.
Marijuana Comes To Rural Oklahoma
When medical marijuana was legalized last year, growers and dispensaries took action. And, in just a little over a year, even the smallest towns have felt the positive impact. In the news article published by The Oklahoman, they explain how “The medical marijuana industry is booming in Oklahoma’s southwestern-most county. Per capita, it has been one of the most lucrative counties in the entire state when it comes to tax collections for marijuana products.” It was also noted that the Slow Burn dispensary started by our own Derek Woods is the reason for the boost in taxes in the small county of Harmon, in Southwest Oklahoma.
Derek started the dispensary in the same town where he grew up, a town of less than 2,000, and people have embraced it. And according to Derek, “It’s brought a lot of pride to me being able to service my community, I think if an outsider tried to do this, the trust factor wouldn’t be there.” The article goes on to discuss more about the spread of the marijuana business across the state. What Lies Ahead?
Many people are still hoping for the day when recreational use is legalized, but for right now, getting a medical marijuana license has been a fairly easy process. According to a recent article from Tulsa World news, Over 200,000 patients registered for medical marijuana in the first year of the program.
As the demand within the marijuana industry continues to grow, so have the opportunities. With the success of Slow Burn, the business was expanded into wholesale. Operating under the name Desert Extracts, we manufacture high-quality cannabis concentrates and now supply dozens of dispensaries around the state. We also have an exclusive agreement to supply award-winning THC-infused topicals from Colorado company Mary Jane’s Medicinals. Because cannabis-containing products aren’t allowed to be shipped across state lines, we receive shipments of the topicals without the active ingredient and then add our own according to Mary Jane’s recipe.
